Artist Statement

As a textile artist, I work to develop Javanese inspired Batik that is in tuned with nature.  My work focuses on organic shapes derived from the unique textures, patterns, and rich colors found in nature.  I intentionally simplify each piece with no more than three colors as not to distract the viewer from the essence of the work.  I continually strive to find the connections and symbolism associated with people and nature.  My interest lies primarily in how we relate to objects in nature with a focus on trees, their branches, bark and roots. As I apply wax to the muslin fabric the wax takes on a shape of its own creating natural unexpected imperfections similar to those found in the bark and branches of trees.  By allowing the wax to take shape I’m pulled into unexpected directions making my work uncontrived.  I continually find myself lost and fully immersed in the new interesting shape.  As I apply the dye to the muslin the colors bleed into each other staining the fabric, yet again creating an unpredictable organic design.  Each piece is ever changing, evolving and develops a new meaning before it’s complete. Just as we are beings that evolve and change so does my work.
